Where Have I Been?

Mostly here:

In the oil patch. The above shot was taken with a wirelessly attached network camera streaming video back to my office. The amount of technology that it takes to accomplish this feat is amazing. But it works, and it works well. The proof of concept is done and worked. The prototype is done and it worked. Now it's time to plan the real deal: real-time video and instrumental monitoring accessible by the internet and affordable to the independent producer. It sounds like I will be doing a business plan.

Mostly I pre-stage all of the equipment that I take to the field, but inevitably there is some set-up during actual deployment. Sitting there in the dog house, configuring routers and IP based equipment in the middle of the boonies ... I cannot describe the joy that brings me. I have no idea why, but it does. Working with electronic equipment under harsh and even hostile conditions is challenging to say the least, maybe that's why it's so fun to me.

So, why not blog about it?

Well, for one thing, I don't write real fast. I consider my words and it takes me a while. The time just hasn't been there. For another thing, there doesn't seem to be anybody else doing this, at least not in this region, and I don't want to give away the farm. I'll blog about some of the technical details, though.

Why I haven't been blogging at all is somewhat more complicated. Blogging isn't just writing. It also entails a lot of reading. Around Christmas I started reading a bunch of religious blogs that basically "diss" the spiritual gifts in today's world. I reacted rather negatively, I think, and took a break entirely from reading blogs. I guess I should have stuck to politics :-)

Blogging is too much fun to quit for too long, though. But, I gotta go for now ...
