Sunset in West Texas

Sunset has to be one of my favorite times of the day. There is an almost reverent quietness that envelopes the end of the West Texas day. It's as if all of nature simply pauses and takes a deep breath.

In those moments, a whiporwil ushers in the evening, a mourning dove makes his soulful cry, and fireflies dance in the dusk. It's a time of deep reflection, of wondering where one is going and contemplating where one has been.

It's not quite in the day. Oh no. At first morning's light it is positively noisy with all of the creatures awaking. Likewise with the night. Crickets and katydids sing, frogs positively holler, and the mockingbirds practice their mimicking.

Sometimes life needs to be like sunset. Pause: take a breath.
